Two Families, Two Budgets

We composed a weekly menu (three meals a day for 7 days) for each family that comes as close as possible to meeting the 2011 USDA food plate standards and we developed a shopping list based on this menu.

The Smith Family. This family of four is living at the poverty level in the Philadelphia area, earning $22,025 per year with a weekly food budget of $42.36, plus about $25 in food assistance (food stamps, WIC, coupons, etc.) for a total budget of $67.36

The Jones Family. This family of four is living at the Philadelphia median income of $63,316 with a weekly food budget of $121.76, plus about $10 in coupons for a total budget of $131.76
